Laura Scarpa

Born in Venice in 1957, she lived in Milan for 20 years and now lives and works in Rome. A comic book author, children's illustrator, editor, and teacher, she has made comics and their dissemination a personal journey. As an author, she has written and illustrated stories for "Linus," "Alter," "Orient Express," "Il Corriere dei Piccoli," "Snoopy," "Ragazza In," "Orient Express," "Lupo Alberto Magazine," "Blue," "Terre di Mezzo," "Mondo Naif," "Touch," "Canemucco," and "Internazionale," as well as graphic novels, including Venturina Veneziana, Come la vita, Cuori di carne, Amori lontani, una storia per La vita inaspettata (Rizzoli Lizard 2014). In France, Sous les étoiles was published in 2017. She published her encounter with Hugo Pratt for Delcourt and then Hachette, and in the magazine «Les Cahiers de la Bande Dessinée» as well as in «Spirou» and «9° Art». For three years, her weekly cartoon Visto da Laura was published in «La Prealpina», a Varese newspaper. In 2018, her graphic novel War Painters 1915-1918. Come l’arte salva dalla guerra was published, and in 2021, Sarah dai capelli blu was released for ComicOut. Her books are due out in 2022 with Shockdom and Mondadori. Also a web author, she illustrates her diary Caffè a colazione (on Tumblr), which has also been published in a book, and has published two short stories, serialized in the international English-language digital magazine «Aces Weekly», edited by David Lloyd. As an editor, she has edited «Corriere dei Piccoli», «Winx Club», «Pixie Mag», «Blue», and «Touch». She edited the magazines "Scuola di Fumetto" and "Blue," and founded "ANIMAls," a graphic novel magazine. She writes essays and educational texts, including Praticamente fumetto, Fumetto facile, L’arte della sceneggiatura, Disegnare Dylan Dog, and Hugo Pratt – Le lezioni perdute. She chairs the ComicOut Cultural Association, which promotes the study and promotion of comics. A long-time teacher at various comics schools and at the IED in Rome, she created and directs the first Italian school of comics, writing, and illustration exclusively online (ascuoladifumetto-online.com).
