La paura mangia l'anima

Directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder

Ali: Fear Eats the Soul
(Angst essen Seele auf, West Germany/1973)
Emmi, a lonely widow, meets and marries Ali, a Moroccan man twenty years younger, challenging bigotry and the surrounding moralism. Fassbinder’s gaze is sincere, and does not recur to pity or political discourse, focusing instead on Ali’s perception of his difference and separation due to his status of immigrant. Ali is not “explained”: he’s a lonely man that strives for survival in a society that defines him as a sentimental outsider because of his fragility and need for love in an environment dominated by the cynical bourgeois caste.
