About

HAMELIN

Hamelin
is a cultural association devoted to the promotion of reading and visual literacy. Founded in 1996 in Bologna, Italy, it is active in the field of children's literature, comics and illustration.

We organize reading and visual literacy projects for children and teenagers; we train teachers, librarians and professionals of the education and publishing field; we organize cultural events, comics and illustration exhibitions.
Since 2018 we are co-curators, alongside the Municipality of Bologna, of the children's literature and illustration festival BOOM! Crescere nei libri.

We publish the quarterly magazine “Hamelin. Storie figure pedagogia, and ”Oblò’", a series of monographs dedicated to the most important children's authos. We have edited several volumes dedicated to illustration, children's literature and comics.

All of our activities are driven by a principle: reading allows to develop a sense of self and the world.

In the field of comics, we are active on several different fronts:

  • from 2007 to 2021 we curated BilBOlbul International Comics Festival, one of the most influential events dedicated to comics in the European scene;
  • since 2022 we curate the international festival A occhi aperti. Disegnare il contemporaneo;
  • we co-curate the programming of the Comics Corner section at Bologna Children's Book Fair
  • we organise training courses for teachers and workshops for schools to enhance comic reading literacy;
  • we produce exhibitions, cultural events and conferences;
  • we participate in European comics promotion projects, such as Invisible Lines;
  • we publish essays and critical volumes on comics.

A OCCHI APERTI

A occhi aperti is an international comics and illustration festival curated by Hamelin.

Launched in 2022 as an evolution of BilBOBul International Comics Festival, A occhi aperti brings a new perspective to the festival format.
Its aim is not just to show the artistic value of contemporary comics, but to question how comics  reflects our times, presenting it as as a looking-glass through which to look at reality.

Every edition is built around a topic that encompasses some of the most compelling issues of our times and explores it through the works of comics artists from all over the world.

The festival itself becomes a tool for investigating our reality through a 4-day programme composed of exhibitions, talks, artistic residences, screenings, workshops and a specific programme dedicated to self-publishing and independent comics.
BILBOLBUL. INTERNATIONAL COMICS FESTIVAL (2007 - 2021)
