Progetto speciale: Dominique Goblet

SPECIAL PROJECT: DOMINIQUE GOBLET

Every year, A occhi aperti chooses an artist that has left their mark on the history of contemporary comics, and invites them to let their work pass through the city with a special project.
Dominique Goblet is the protagonist of the 2024 edition: a revolutionary artist and a pioneer in the field of experimental comics, she’s one of the most impactful personalities in the European landscape of the last twenty years.

Goblet’s works will be portrayed all over the city of Bologna, thanks to a series of showcases, meetups and movie screenings organized alongside several cultural institutions, in a journey that will encompass different mediatic languages - from comics to contemporary art to cinema and painting - that, like her art, are in perpetual metamorphosis
COSTELLAZIONI: THE FIRST PERSONAL EXHIBIT OF DOMINIQUE GOBLET IN ITALY
Costellazioni is at the centerpiece of the special project, and the first authorial exhibition realized in Italy, located in the ex-church of San Mattia.

From November 15 to December 15, the public will be able to witness firsthand an exclusive preview of the original panels belonging to the first two chapters of her still-running trilogy, exploring the relationship between the female body and the environment: Ostende, a story of feminine rebirth set upon the shores of the Northern Sea, and the cycle Les forêts sombres, in which women physically and symbolically traverse a forest, in a play of light and shadow.
Like stars in a constellation, Goblet’s other works will branch off from this central core, in a journey of almost twenty years of career, to form in unison a complete portrait of an author that has left her mark on the evolution of comics.

The opening of the exhibit, on November 14 at 19:30, will also be honored by the presence of Dominique Goblet herself.
MEETUPS
Dominique Goblet will hold two meetups at DAS, the center stage of A Occhi Aperti.

On November 16, at 17:00, there will be an interview between Goblet and Patrizia Cirino, anthropologist and art historian, in a debate concerning her relationship between art and the landscape. The meetup will be a part of the Conversazioni a vignetta cycle, in collaboration with the Erasmus Mundus in Literary Cultures - University of Bologna, Academy of Fine arts of Bologna.

On Sunday, November 17, at 11:30, Goblet will participate at a roundtable along with Gwénola Carrère and Joe Kessler and reflect on the themes of this edition of A occhi aperti.

DOMINIQUE GOBLET AT THE ACCADEMIA DELLE BELLE ARTI
In addition to being an artist, Goblet teaches comic art at the Brussels École de Recherche Graphique. As such, she’ll meet the future artists and illustrators of the Comics and Illustration courses held at Accademia delle Belle Arti di Bologna - which will also celebrate its twentieth birthday - by holding a lesson on her artistic journey and offering portfolio reviews to the students that wish to present her their works.

CARTA BIANCA: DOMINIQUE GOBLET AT THE MOVIES
The Carta bianca: a Dominique Goblet Movie Screening is dedicated to the movies that have influenced Goblet’s artwork: a cycle of four screenings held at Cinema Modernissimo, selected by the author in collaboration with Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna

LA PAURA MANGIA L’ANIMA (Ali: Fear Eats the Soul)
Directed by Rainer Werner Fassbinder (93')
(Angst essen Seele auf, West Germany/1973)
Emmi, a lonely widow, meets and marries Ali, a Moroccan man twenty years younger, challenging bigotry and the surrounding moralism. Fassbinder’s gaze is sincere, and does not recur to pity or political discourse, focusing instead on Ali’s perception of his difference and separation due to his status of immigrant. Ali is not “explained”: he’s a lonely man that strives for survival in a society that defines him as a sentimental outsider because of his fragility and need for love in an environment dominated by the cynical bourgeois caste.

SCOMPARTIMENTO N. 6 (Compartment No. 6)
Directed by Juho Kuosmanen (107’)
(Hytti No. 6, Finland-Estonia-Germany-Russia/2021)
A Finnish student and a Russian miner find themselves sharing a train cabin during a long journey towards the city of Murmansk, above the Arctic Circle.
Despite the initial hostility and radical differences between them, their meeting will reshape their perspective on life. Following The Happiest Day in the Life of Olli Mäki, Juho Kuosmanen’s second work is a Road Movie about our ability to accept ourselves as well as other people.

LES GLANEURS ET LA GLANEUSE (The Gleaners)
Directed by Agnès Varda (85’)
(France/2000)
Starting from the famous painting by Millet, Varda builds an essay of pictures concerning the theme of Gleaning (Glaneur in French), which means collecting, foraging, restoring objects and stuff. Camera in hand, Varda journeys through Frances, retracing the experiences of country foragers as well as the people that practiced gleaning in the streets and dumpsters of Paris due to need, or as sport, or again as an ethical principle. But the true Gleaner is the director herself, gleaning pictures, stories, and reflections on the passing of time.

IL MUCCHIO SELVAGGIO (The Wild Bunch)
Directed by Sam Peckinpah (135’)
(The Wild Bunch, USA/1969)
“The best movie by Peckinpah, the one that made him a legendary director, and not just of the Wild West genre. Along with Straw Dogs, The Wild Bunch is his most violent work, the start of a different way of portraying shootouts. But it’s also (once again) a painful reflection on the past and a harsh condemnation of the rhetoric of order and law, a rhetoric that acts lowly and criminally in front of those that, despite being outlaws, are ready to go all the way to remain faithful to themselves. A work that is both anarchic and sad, and a landmark for future Wild West movies”. (Franco La Polla)

PAESAGGI DI CARNE
The first edition of Paesaggi di carne, published by Sigaretten, will complete this full portrait of the author. Goblet’s first italian book will contain a rich selection of pictures from her Carnet works, along with an extensive interview curated by Hamelin.

The special project is realized in collaboration with Musei Nazionali di Bologna - ex-Church of San Mattia, Fondazione Cineteca di Bologna, Erasmus Mundus in European Literary Cultures - Università di Bologna, Accademia di Belle Arti di Bologna, Galerie Martel, Sigaretten, with the contribution of Wallonie - Bruxelles International.

The
Costellazioni exhibition is part of a national program promoted by Musei Nazionali di Bologna - ex Chiesa di San Mattia, with the aim of reuniting around the ex-church of Saint Mattia the A occhi aperti, Gender Bender and Archivio Aperto festivals, in order to promote a new interpretation of the church spaces through languages and practices of the contemporary age.
